Who Makes Killer Instinct Crossbows?

Killer Instinct, Inc. was founded in 2013 in Frankenmuth, Michigan, with a simple pitch: accurate, dependable crossbows at a price that undercuts the legacy archery brands. It grew fast enough that by January 12, 2022, Generation Growth Capital Fund III (GGC), a Milwaukee-based private equity firm, announced it had acquired Killer Instinct, partnering with Aldine Capital and the company's former majority shareholder, Tod Quiring, on the deal. Killer Instinct kept operating under its existing management and its Frankenmuth, Michigan headquarters, with an additional office in Windom, Minnesota.

Killer Instinct crossbows are not manufactured in the United States. Like the large majority of mainstream crossbow brands, the bows are built in Taiwan, and the US side of the business is focused on the work that happens before and after manufacturing rather than final assembly on the line.

That split is disclosed by Killer Instinct itself rather than hidden - it is standard practice across the crossbow category, where hitting a hunter-friendly retail price on a mechanically complex product depends on manufacturing scale that US factories generally cannot match on cost.

The short answer is price. Building a crossbow - a machined barrel, a synchronized cam system, a trigger assembly, stock and rail components - is closer to light manufacturing than it is to, say, sewing a hunting jacket. Doing that work in Taiwan lets Killer Instinct hit the entry and mid-tier price points that built the brand's reputation, without the tooling and labor cost of a US assembly line. It is the same tradeoff most of the crossbow market has already made, which is why the country of manufacture rarely shows up as a differentiator between competing brands at a given price tier.

The lineup runs to roughly ten main crossbow models plus a full accessory line, all sold under the Killer Instinct name rather than through third-party OEM brands. None of the ownership changes affected the Taiwan manufacturing arrangement or the Michigan-based product and support team - the acquisition was a change of capital structure, not a change of factory or design team.
